Two MDC researchers among top-quoted scientists worldwide

Two scientists from MDC have been named Highly Cited Researchers: Sofia Forslund and Nikolaus Rajewsky are on the list of the top-quoted researchers worldwide.

The highly anticipated list identifies scientists and social scientists from 21 disciplines who produced multiple papers ranking in the top 1% by citations for their field and year of publication, demonstrating significant research influence among their peers.

The ranking has been published by the US company Clarivate Analytics since 2014. The methodology that determines the who’s who of influential researchers draws on the data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts from the Institute for Scientific Information at the Web of Science Group.  The analysis is based on the "Web of Science Core Collection" database, which lists scientific articles from around 21100 scientific journals. For the current evaluation in 2019, the period from 2008 to 2018 was analyzed.

This year the list includes 6,217 Highly Cited Researchers in various fields from nearly 60 nations. US-scientists represent 44 percent of the researchers on the list (2737), followed by researchers from China (636) and Great Britain (517). Germany ranks fourth with 327 of the most cited men and women in science.

About the MDC Scientists

Dr. Sofia Forslund is junior group leader at the Experimental and Clinical Research Centre (ECRC), a facility of Max Delbrück Centrum für Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. She investigates how the composition of the gut‘s microbiom influence health and disease in humans.

Professor Nikolaus Rajewsky is Scientific Director of the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) of the MDC and head of a working group. He investigates RNA-binding proteins and the role and function of non-coding RNA, which are important for many cellular processes, health and the development of diseases. He is coordinator of the LifeTime consortium, which brings together more than 200 scientists from 90 research institutions in 21 countries.

The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC)

The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) is one of the world’s leading biomedical research institutions. Max Delbrück, a Berlin native, was a Nobel laureate and one of the founders of molecular biology. At the MDC’s locations in Berlin-Buch and Mitte, researchers from some 60 countries analyze the human system – investigating the biological foundations of life from its most elementary building blocks to systems-wide mechanisms. By understanding what regulates or disrupts the dynamic equilibrium in a cell, an organ, or the entire body, we can prevent diseases, diagnose them earlier, and stop their progression with tailored therapies. Patients should benefit as soon as possible from basic research discoveries. The MDC therefore supports spin-off creation and participates in collaborative networks. It works in close partnership with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in the jointly run Experimental and Clinical Research Center (ECRC), the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) at Charité, and the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK). Founded in 1992, the MDC today employs 1,600 people and is funded 90 percent by the German federal government and 10 percent by the State of Berlin.
