Neuroscience is one of Berlin’s strongest fields of research. The Berlin Brains lecture series at Urania shows the breadth and depth of this research expertise in the capital city – this year under the theme “Junior Meets Senior.” The MDC’s Thomas Willnow and Anna Löwa are kicking off the series.

Now in its seventh “round,” this successful collaboration between Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Urania Berlin will be jointly presented in 2021 by the Einstein Center for Neurosciences Berlin (ECN), the NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence, the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC), the Collaborative Research Center 1315 (SFB1315), the Center for Stroke Research Berlin (CSB) and the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin (BCCN Berlin).

This year’s theme is “Junior Meets Senior”: In each lecture two neuroscientists will team up to present their latest research. The series will launch on January 26 at 7:30 p.m. with two MDC researchers: Professor Thomas Willnow, head of the Molecular Cardiovascular Research Lab, and Dr. Anna Löwa, from the Organoids Platform at the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB). Their lecture is entitled “Danger to the Brain – On the Trail of the Causes of Alzheimer’s,” and will be recorded on video.

Description:

The causes of Alzheimer's disease have been researched for nearly 120 years. This lecture gives a picture of the current state of research. It is now known that hereditary factors play a major role in the development of Alzheimer's disease. But how do scientists identify risk factors in the human genome? How do they elucidate their mode of action in "organoids", miniature brains that grow in crystal shells?
In addition to insights into their work, Thomas Willnow and Anna Löwa will provide an outlook. They discuss how a better understanding of hereditary factors should help identify people at increased risk for Alzheimer's dementia at an early stage. And how preventive measures can help prevent an outbreak of the disease.
